StorageTek’s employee e-mails grew to an average size that often exceeded the company’s standard mailbox limit of 35 MBs. And with analysts projecting an 11-fold increase in the average size of e-mail messages between 2003 and 2007, the problem was going to get worse. As a result, workers’ productivity frequently took a hit when they had to take time from their jobs to administer e-mail. File restore times were hampered by the massive data volume as well, sometimes taking up to 16 hours per incident.

Solutions
The company deployed StorageTek’s Email ArchiveMasterTM solution to address the e-mail growth problem. It lessened the administrative burden on employees by automating the process of migrating older e-mails and attachments to StorageTek’s D178 Disk Subsystem. A batch service job manages users’ e-mail boxes to keep online data in the 50-70 MB range. When capacities exceed predetermined settings, ArchiveMaster automatically archives e-mails utilizing predefined protocols to cull older and larger-sized files. This process provides a virtual “bottomless” amount of user e-mail storage. Data is protected by backing it up to StorageTek T9840 and T9940 cartridges residing in a PowderHorn library.
