The Canadian Depository for Securities Ltd.: Case Study Brief

The Canadian Depository for Securities Ltd., meets its stringent DR requirements with StorageTek shared virtual arrays and PPRC software microcode tools.

Business issues
As Canada’s securities settlement clearing entity, CDS is vital to the national economy. Downtime for the enterprise is simply not acceptable. Hence company executives mandated that the firm’s BC/DR capabilities be upgraded. Simultaneously, the firm needed to increase capacity and performance to accommodate a 100 percent growth in data storage.

Solutions
CDS deployed a synchronous-mirrored solution utilizing three StorageTek V2X2 Shared Virtual Array disk subsystems. Two were deployed at the company’s primary datacenter in Toronto and one at its hot DR site. Synchronous mirroring is provided by two linked V2X2s utilizing StorageTek’s Power PPRC and PPRC SnapShot microcode in its mainframe environment and Proxy PPRC for the open systems environment. This enabled the company to consolidate its mainframe and open systems management tasks and run them from a single interface by one administrator.

Business benefits
Exceeded DR recovery capability—now able to complete task in half the time. Solution compression capabilities deferred about 900,000 dollars in communications infrastructure upgrades and maintenance expenses. Simplified administration by enabling management of mainframe and open systems environments from single pane of control.

Customer Quote

“StorageTek was the only vendor to back up their proposal with a written performance guarantee. We exceeded our SLA objectives at a lower cost and were able to defer about 900,000 dollars in communications upgrade expenditures utilizing StorageTek’s data compression capabilities. Needless to say, we’re very pleased with the solution’s performance.”
