All American car manufacturers in the 1950s offered a dizzying array of gadgets and gizmos and Mercury certainly came to the party offering more than 50 optional accessories. This was the jet age where modern conveniences seemed to know no limits. The accessories were given catchy names like Climate Dial air conditioner, Breezaway rear window and Seat-O-Matic electric seat. Americans went mad over all these spiffy gadgets and car manufacturers made a packet out of selling them. It was all about modernity, and perhaps a bit of keeping up with the Jones's. Mercury also packaged up accessories into accessory groups, such as the glamour group and the visual aid group. Some of the options and accessories came as standard on the more expensive models.
Following are many of the options and accessories available on the 1958 Mercury. Please note that there are considerable inconsistencies and information gaps between the various pieces of Mercury literature and so the following is my best guess based on the information available. I would kill to get my hands on a 1958 Mercury accessory manual so if you have one please contact me. The accessory descriptions are generally transcribed from the various information sources.

Touch-O-Matic Overdrive |
 |
Mercury's overdrive transmission provides a fourth forward speed which can increase gas mileage as much as 20%. Overdrive reduces engine revolutions and thereby adds to engine life, and reduces noise level. When in operation, overdrive planetary gear set provides a 0.72 to 1 gear ratio, compared with the 1 to 1 high gear ratio.
Optional on Medalist, Monterey and Commuter where standard transmission fitted. |
Power Transfer Differential |

Power-Booster Fan |
 |
Rotates at engine speed at low vehicle speeds but progressively freewheels as vehicle speed increases. Saves power other fans waste and runs more quietly. This noise reduction is particularly noticeable at highway speeds and in air-conditioned cars on which radiator fans are designed to turn faster.

Dual Exhaust System |
 |
Reduces exhaust back pressure...saves fuel.
Standard on Park Lane and where 400hp engine fitted. |
Vacuum-Powered Multi-Luber |
 |
One of the many features pioneered by Mercury is the vacuum-powered chassis lubrication system which has proven popular with Mercury owners. Each time the engine is started the Multi-Luber cycles and quickly lubricates the front suspension and steering. Hear a squeak while driving ? No problem - just press the convenient dash-mounted button to send some lubrication to the trouble spot. Warning light indicates to driver when lubricant is low. |
Air Cushion Ride |
 |
Mercury makes another major advancement in ride improvement with the introduction of full-air suspension - called Air Cushion Ride - for 1958. In this new suspension system, air springs replace steel springs in both the front and rear suspension. |
Power Steering |
 |
Hydraulic power assistance for steering does 80% of the work but retains all of the driving feel. Mercury vehicles built with power steering have a newly developed crankshaft-driven hydraulic pump - a Ford Motor Company innovation for 1958. Larger in sized, slower turning, quieter, more durable...it represents a major improvement over belt-driven power steering pumps. In conjunction with the new pump, the power steering hydraulic fluid reservoir has been moved to a higher, cleaner lcoation on the engine. In fact, the entire power steering system from reservoir to the hydraulic linkage booster is new for 1958. With the introduction of the integral hydraulic pump, Ford Motor Company makes the power steering system a completely integrated part of the car - another Ford engineering "first".
