Mercury offered 14 models and body styles in 1958. 10 were sedans and 4 were wagons. All had equal body dimensions except the Park Lane models which were 7" longer and 0.2" higher than all the others. Like most other automobile manufacturers Mercury was right into the hard-top craze. A hard-top is a body style which has no central pillar above door-level and so with all the windows down the effect is wide open spaces. Always looking to distinguish itself, Mercury called its hard-top models phaetons, an old-fashioned word for a large touring car. Mercury also made a big fuss of the fact that the non hard-top models had a concealed central pillar thereby giving them a hard-top effect.
