Oh the fun of finding the front engine mounts for my car. The chassis parts manual shows the type to the left. This is the type that every second parts supplier sells as being correct for the 1958 Mercury. However, the service manual shows the type to the right. This is also the type that is in my car. Clearly they are not interchangeable because the first type has two studs to fasten it to the chassis and the second has one. Also the first type looks like the mating surface on the engine block is parallel to the mounting bracket on the chassis. With the second type the mounting bracket on the chassis is more horizontal and so the engine mount assembly is accordingly angled.
I had to search high and low to find the second type. In the end I found a gentleman who revulcanises them (see
Parts Sources). He actually sells them for the 1958 Edsel with 410ci engine but fortuitously they are the same as for the 1958 Mercury Park Lane with 430ci engine.
What is the deal ? I suspect the type in my car was used for the 430ci engine and the more available type for the 383ci engine in its various power forms but I have found nothing to confirm this. It is confusing that the chassis parts manual shows the common type as being for all models and the service manual shows only an image of the second type. There is nothing that shows the two types and differentiates their usage.
